A boys rule

I was holding Elizabeth and happened to notice her bangs looked a little funny. Upon closer inspection, it looked like there was a small chunk that had been cut. I decided to interogate Ian.

"Ian, did you cut Elizabeth's hair?"

"No."

"Remember, you get in less trouble if you just tell the truth. Did you cut her hair?"

"Oh, no!" he said. "I would never cut a ladies' hair. That is a boys rule: you don't cut girls' hair!"

Grateful he asked first

Ian was wanting to play and the two older girls weren't interested. I suggested he ask Elizabeth to play.

"Okay!" he said happily. "Is it okay if I make her go up in the air? Because I know how!!"

Do I want to know how he 'knows how'? Probably not.

A scary find

While cleaning, I found a hammer and two pairs of scissors in Ian's room. All three items were confiscated.

While I wasn't paying attention, something happened

One minute the nurse handed me this dark-haired sweet baby:

And the next, poof, she is an eleven year old:

I know it is terribly cliche for me to say how fast time has gone, but man, time has gone by SO quickly! Alexandria celebrated her eleventh birthday on September 16th. I took her out to lunch and shopping. She wanted Annika to come too, so the three of us enjoyed a girls' day out. She also enjoyed some special time with each of her sets of grandparents. She is a blessed girl to have so many people who love her!!

I have been going through pictures of Alexandria so I can make her a slideshow and it has been a fun stroll down memory lane. I remember, as a newborn, her hair was jet-black and so long in the back it hung over the white blanket the nurses had her swaddled in. Then, in picture after picture of baby Alexandria I was struck by something: she was an intense baby! There are a few pictures of her smiling, but in most she is just big-eyed, taking everything in.

The toddler years were active ones for Alexandria. She was busy locking herself in the apartment (with no adult in there with her!! Karl was taking the trash down!), locking herself in the bathroom, pouring entire boxes of crackers out and having herself a little party. Another time, Karl and I spent an hour looking for our keys, only to find them in the ignition of Alexandria's Little Tykes Cozy Coupe Car. She was such a little person, too. At a babyshower for Annika at church, Alexandria was so enthralled with every gift I opened. She was just over 2 years old, but with every present would say "Ohhhhh! That is so cute!!!"

She grew bigger and bigger and was still so observant. She would compliment Grandma on a new plant that no one else had noticed, and she remembered EVERYTHING! She was a social butterfly who loved to be on the go. She never was upset with being left anywhere...just excited to see what was going on there. One thing that stuck out to me was how she liked to keep her world very...pleasant. She was (and is still) sunshine and rainbows and please don't make her read or watch anything that is not nice. She hated Disney movies because their was always some unpleasantness. She hated reading the Ramona books because Ramona was always making bad choices. A familiar phrase was "I don't want to watch/read that! They are so ANGRY in that book/show!" She did like Little House on the Praire and she approved of Laura and Mary's good behavior.

I homeschooled Alexandria in kindergarten and 2nd grade. She went to an enrichment academy one day a week. I asked her kindergarten teacher how she was doing and she told me she was very independent. She would grab her tray at lunchtime, and just go sit down at a table, it didn't matter who she was sitting by, boy or girl, she didn't care. Now she is in public school and is doing well. She loves to learn and is interested in history, science and geography.

I love watching her grow up and seeing what God is doing in her life. She has such a sweet spirit. She is generous and really cares about other people. She is fearless in that she will jump wholeheartedly into any activity. She will jump on stage and do karaoke, will sing in front of the entire church, will volunteer for almost anything without batting an eye. She is so pleasant to be around too. She is appreciative of everything and always has a sunny dispostion. The last eleven years have been so great for Karl and me and we can't wait to see what is next in store for our girl.

Elizabeth's checkup

Elizabeth had her three year checkup last week (better late than never!) She was such a good patient. It made me smile to see her sitting quietly on the table and looking so sober while the nurse took her blood pressure. Of course she was unhappy about the shots but she got a sticker and a new Little Critter book from the nurse, which made it better. Poor thing is so spindly they had to do the shots in her legs, because they said her arms didn't have enough meat on them. Her measurements are about the same as always, percentage-wise.

Weight: 26 lb. (3rd percentile)

Height: 38 in. (50th percentile)

First (and third) Day of School

School started a month ago and I am just now getting the first day pictures on here! Oh for shame! Let me tell you how exhausting it is being me though. First of all, I tried putting the camera's memory card into the computer via some little thingy that plugs in the usb port (?not sure if that is what it is called?) The plug in thingy broke apart in my hand. So I started a search for the cable that connects the camera to the computer. It was nowhere to be found. Weeks pass. Tonight I felt a surge of renewed interest in locating it and ventured into Karl's closet, which is a graveyard of plugs, wires, motherboards, adaptors and various other equipment. I got distracted by the scanner which I forgot I had and began looking for its plugs and cables. Finally, my attention was called back to the matter at hand, and lo and behold, buried in a box underneath 542 other cords was my camera cord. Yay!! I plugged the camera into the computer and stared at the monitor expectantly. Nothing happened. I unplugged it, stared at the cable, then plugged it back in. In a surprising twist, that did not fix the problem. So I plugged it in another usb spot/port/hub (I really don't know) and nothing happened. For some reason, I got the notion to check my camera for a memory card. Yeah...the camera had no card in it. But where oh where could the missing card be? Thirty minutes later I found it, still inside the broken plug in thingy that I put it in at the start of this long boring story. So there you have it.

Now on to school...The first day did not go so well in that Alexandria and I were both ill with a stomach bug. It was really all I could do to get up and snap off a few pictures of Ian and Annika. Due to a bus stop misunderstanding, they ended up missing the bus and I had to drive them to school. I told Annika to help Ian find his way to class (parents aren't really encouraged to roam the halls at their school.) Ian informed her that he did NOT need any help finding it, that he could do it himself, thankyouverymuch. Out of the car they hopped and disappeared into the school. I suppose it was somewhat of a blessing that I was so sick, because it distracted me from being as sad as I normally would be at the sight of my new kindergartner marching off so bravely, with his Batman backpack. Alexandria missed the first two days of 5th grade so her '1st' day was really the 3rd day. So much for perfect attendance.

The kids all seem to be enjoying school this year. Alexandria (or Allie, as she is called in school) was selected to be on the yearbook staff. Her job is taking pictures and doing something with the pictures on the computer. Luckily she takes after her dad in that department. So she is very excited about her new job, she likes her new teacher, and she has also started back up with Girl Scouts which she loves.
Annika is doing well too. She is trying out for the Sing-o-gram team at school and is happy to have some of her good friends in her class. She is one of those kids that loves school, which is such a blessing.
Ian has adjusted amazingly well to kindergarten. We had one day where he refused to go to the bus stop, then refused to get on the bus, then refused to stay in his seat. Nothing like wrestling a five year old down the street and trying to pin him down in his bus seat...especially since I was not prepared to do so and was thus in my lounge-y clothes and had no shoes on. Thankfully, we have not had a repeat of that performance and he seems to love school. His homework is to read 20 minutes every night and he has decided, now that he is in kindergarten, that we can only read chapter books. I am struggling to find books that a 5 year old boy would like, so if anyone knows of any good ones, let me know. So far we have read The Boxcar Children, a few of the Magic Treehouse Books, and are currently reading Ramona the Pest. Ian kind of likes Ramona. When Alexandria was his age, she could NOT stand the Ramona books, because it made her nervous how Ramona was always misbehaving. Ian doesn't have that issue.

So that has been our month- getting adjusted to the school routine, dealing with the stomach bug descending upon our house TWICE, and my general ditziness that makes every task three times as hard as it should be.

Our Summer Slideshow

We had such a great summer this year. We didn't do anything big, but we had so much fun. The girls both went to camp, we went on a camping trip with our church, we got to see our out-of-town families, we went on lots of play dates. We went to the zoo, the splash park, the pool, the lake and lots of other fun places. We learned that Annika loves baseball and that Ian can do flips off the boat. Elizabeth learned to like swimming and Annika learned that she can put her face in the water (which opened up a whole new world of swimming under water, doing handstands and cannonballs.) Alexandria learned to cook and made a really good enchilada dinner all by herself. Ian lost his first tooth, Elizabeth turned three and started talking a lot more and Alexandria got to sing in front of the church with her buddy Alyssa. Alexandria and Annika got baptized and all of the kids are learning so much at church. I am thankful that I was able spend so much time with the kids over the summer, doing all these fun things. I am already missing them now that they are back in school!

A (kind of) good day

So I forgot to blog about the horrible, no good, very bad day we had a while back. I'll do the condensed version. We got lost taking Annika to camp, she was an hour late. My cell phone died and we were extremely late meeting Tricia and the kids at Crown Center. There were no pay phones around ANYWHERE for me to call Tricia and let her know. Ian got car sick. An hour late, we finally arrived at Crown Center (of course Tricia and the kids had already left.) After seeing the line snaking out of Fritz's (the restaurant where the train brings you your food) we settled for a pretzel in the food court. We sat down, exhausted, and I asked Ian to pray for our food.

Here is how his prayer started out:
"Dear Jesus,
Thank you for this good day...ummm, this kind-of good day."

I love Ian! He also admonished Elizabeth for jabbering while he was praying:

"ELIZABETH! You do NOT talk during prayer time. That is NOT appropriate to God!"

Monday, July 26, 2010

Me: Ian, you were such a good boy at Grandma Goody and Barry's!

Ian: Yeah, that's cause I've been reading the Bible too much.

Me: Does reading the Bible help you remember to be good?

Ian: Yes, when I read it then I obey God.

Make it a Sprite next time

Just a few of the questions Ian had on the 30 minute car ride home from Papa and Nana's (after a busy day that left the rest of the kids exhausted):

What is air made of?

What are rocks made of?

How do they make firecrackers?

How come the firecrackers can still go off if it is raining? Why doesn't the rain put the fire out?

What is car insurance?

Why does World's of Fun have a balloon on their sign?

Are there any stores that are open at midnight?

Can you please name all the stores that are open at midnight?

Now name all the stores that aren't open at midnight.

-Moral of the story? Holiday or no, henceforth that boy does NOT get any caffeine!

Quick update

Once again, no blogging in awhile; things have been really busy around here! Elizabeth is talking up a storm, Ian lost his first tooth (pictures to come), Annika is having a blast with baseball (and has already decided she will be playing basketball next) and Alexandria just got back from camp on Thursday. I have kept myself busy with the kids, the pets and working out. So just a short post for tonight, but I will be back soon with pictures of the toothless boy, the 4th and Alexandria singing in church.

And...

The exercise log that used to be on the side on this blog will be making a return. I have been not as motivated as I should be so hopefully that will help. One can hope, right? Because this is getting ridiculous.

Tantrums, baseball and goals

So far, school has been out for a week and a half and the children are already restless. We have been to the zoo twice, swimming twice, boat riding and intertubing, to the park and we also have been to the YMCA several times. For some reason though, all four kids have been out of sorts. Particularly Ian and Elizabeth. Ian, I suspect, has had a hard time dealing with the change in household dynamic that has come with the girls being home from school. It usually takes him awhile to adapt when any change occurs. Elizabeth has entered the terrible threes, which I have found with all of my children to be much worse than the terrible twos. Her new thing to say is "I not.." as in "I not getting dressed", "I not going to bed," etc.

Today we got up and went to the YMCA. I then had to take Annika to the eye doctor to get her glasses fixed because Ian had broken them the night before. We come home, two hours later he breaks them AGAIN! He also made Annika cry by pouring her popcorn on the floor and breaking her new lip gloss. Sigh. We race off to Annika's game, where Elizabeth has a giant meltdown because she doesn't want to sit with me, she wants to go to the playground. I finally positioned myself to where I could watch her and watch the game, (and dash over to assist her when she needed it), so she was (fairly) happy. Ian had a good time playing in the sand...and laying in the sand...and rolling in the sand ...and putting sand in his ears. After the game we ran a quick errand. Elizabeth screamed when we were finished and refused to get in the car. We finally got home and got everyone a snack and cleaned up. And then Elizabeth threw another fit because she didn't want to go to bed.

Between the tantrums, the tattling, and fighting I have been worn out. So I haven't been writing much, but it is probably a good thing! Who wants to read my griping? And see, ChaBa, I do complain, lol. Hopefully things will settle down here pretty soon.

On an accountability note, my three goals are not going so well. I was supposed to run a 5K, read the New Testement in 30 days and start going to school full time. I have been going to the gym regularly, but I need to get back into running more. That is my goal for this coming week. As for reading the New Testement in 30 days? I think in order for me to absorb more, I do better reading slower. Endurance rather than speed...which is also my running goal. So I am reading 1John at the moment and will continue on at a leisurely pace. My school situation is a long story, but that goal is not happening at the moment, so I am patiently waiting for that to work out.

Oh, and in order to make this post even more random, I am including some pictures of my favorite baseball player. I have had so much fun watching her play. She really has so much enthusiasm. Tonight she was the only girl out there (out of both teams!) so she was surrounded by boys, but it didn't seem to faze her in the least.

The birthday girl

Today was Elizabeth's third birthday. Unbelievable! No way is the 'baby' that old.
We are having her party later on so today was pretty low key. We went to the park near the Bass Pro shop and then took a walk on the trail there. Then after Karl got home we did cake and presents. We then went to the park where our church was having a bbq. It was a fun day.

We love that baby girl and are so thankful for her.

Elizabeth's favorite present was her baby doll:

The Graduate

My mom and I were talking about how funny it is that there are so many graduation ceremonies now days- preschool, kindergarten, elemenatary school, middle school, etc. etc. It is funny, but Ian's preschool graduation was a big deal to me. It marks the end of an era for the two of us. His babyhood is over and now he will be a big kid going off to school. Things seem to change once a child hits elementary school. There is a whole new world he will be a part of and I won't know much about it. Will his teacher be nice? How will he do on the school bus? And how will he navigate the cafeteria at school? It is hard to picture that little boy carrying his tray through the lunch line. I will go to Meet your Teacher night and Open House and Parent Teacher Conferences and ask him how his school day was but it is not the same as experiencing everything with him first hand. I have had five years of spending every day with him (save the few hours a week he was in preschool)and knowing everything that he is doing. It is going to be a big change for both of us but I know he will do well.

His graduation was also a big deal because of how much he fought me about going to preschool. But we made it through 10 months of school (9 1/2 months of arguing about him going to school. I am proud of him making it through the year, and also proud of myself for having the patience to deal with all those tough mornings getting him ready against his will. He got an excellent report card and has learned so much this year. He is starting to read a little bit; he can sound out some words like 'cat' and 'dog'.

So, anyway, his graduation ceremony was very nice. He didn't want to go to it (big surprise), but did okay once we got there. He sang several songs with his class and of course walked across the stage to get his diploma. So cute. All his grandparents were there to cheer him on. I am so proud of him and love watching him grow. I can't wait to see what plans God has in store for him.

That answers that question

Me: Ian, you used to be so little! What happened?

Ian: I guess you put my birthday on the schedule too many times.

Mother's Day

This is a little late, but I had to write about the sweet things my kids did for me for Mother's Day. All four kids worked hard to make me beautiful cards. Alexandria and Annika made me breakfast in bed (all by themsleves!) They made pop-tarts, waffles, cereal and fruit. I got some other great presents too. We went to Ethan and Tricia's and their friend was there with a litter of the cutest kittens. And if you can't tell from this blog, I have really been needing something else to feed and clean up after. So after the girls begged and pleaded we agreed to take one home. His name is Sam, and actually he hasn't been much work at all (especially compared to our crazy dog.) Alexandria swore she would feed him and clean his litter box and she has been true to her word. So far the only challenge has been keeping the dog away from Sam and Elizabeth away from Sam (she likes to pull his tail.)

Cousins

We got to spend some time with Ella yesterday and we had so much fun with her. Elizabeth loves Ella and really loves all her belongings. She is always really interested in Ella's diaper bag, bottles , etc. Ella was not having any of sharing her bottle though. Excuse the cheese all over Elizabeth's face.

Ian

This is Ian at church. I told him his shirt was on backwards but he wouldn't believe me. I choose my battles and this one wasn't worth fighting. Plus it will make an excellent photo to show his first girlfirned. Thanks G.Goody for taking it.

A conversation between a boy and a dog

Ian: Max, tell me about what your parents were like.

Max: Woof woof woof.*

Ian: Yeah, that's what I thought.

*translation according to Ian? "Max told me his dad barked all the time and his mom liked to spin around in circles until she got dizzy and fell over."

Update

Wow, I have been horrible at writing lately, haven't I? Really nothing much new is going on. I am still in the process of working on the girls' new room. Someone spilled primer all over the hardwood floor which it turns out is very difficult to remove. I have devoted a portion of each day to sitting on the floor scrape scrape scraping away with a paint scraper. I blame myself because this is the second paint incident that has occurred in that room so it was pretty dumb of me not to lock up the primer. So the girls are still in their old room, Ian is roomless, and his toys are all over the family room because there is no place else to put them.

On top of all that, we had a plumbing problem that has resulted in the bathroom needing a new floor. Ethan has been so gracious in donating his time to ripping out the old floor, re-gluing tiles and preparing to lay the new floor down. We really appreciate him.

Elizabeth has been feeling under the weather, so I took her in to the doctor and discovered she has...a cold. I have not been to the gym in ages because I can't leave her in childcare there with her nose being so yucky.

So that is about all that is happening here. I will update soon with some new pictures.
